what is building momentum?

Building Momentum is designed to meaningfully support emerging & early career artists into industry readiness.
This 3 week program running Monday - Friday includes intensive movement practice in the studio with leading Australian dance artists, the development of new technical and creative skills, mentorship from lead artists and FLING's Artistic Team, weekly performance practice in diverse spaces, plus practical tools and asset development to be ready for your next industry opportunity.

Invest intensively in your dance practice, build collective energy & connection with peers the industry, get to know the practices of industry experts and form lasting relationships with FLING and the artistic team.

Join a small cohort for the inaugural Building Momentum.  
This program is partially subsided by funding from Creative Australia.

Visiting emerging artists live in the Bega Valley region for 3 weeks at own cost - FLING can support some connections to billeting or local accomodation
PROGRAM COST - $1650 for full 3 week program 
FLING can provide letters of confirmation to emerging artists applying for funds to support their participation​

SIOBHAN MCKENNA - WEEK 1
Siobhan McKenna is a Melbourne/Naarm based dance artist. Her experience in dance spans working as a collaborating performer, choreographer, rehearsal director and both teacher or participant in various workshops, classes and residency programs. Siobhan’s choreographic work and practice has been supported by organisations and venues such as Sydney Dance Company, Dancehouse, Temperance Hall, Lucy Guerin Inc., The Substation, Dance Massive, Darebin Arts, The Gunpowder Trading Post and Critical Path, Australian Dance Theatre and the Tanja Liedtke Foundation, and ImpulsTanz (Vienna). Both of Siobhan's work's ‘Utterance’ and ‘Rhythmic Fictions’ were nominated for Best Choreography in the 2019 and 2022 Green Room Awards and in 2022, Siobhan was incredibly grateful to receive an independent artist fellowship from the late Chloe Munro AO and Lucy Guerin Inc.

RACHEL COULSON - WEEK 2

Rachel (she/her) is an independent dance artist based in Naarm. Upon graduating from The Victorian College of the Arts, Rachel has performed in works by Alisdair Macindoe (Okay, Bye!, Plagiary, Reference Material) Alisdair Macindoe and Alison Curry (Progress Report), Antony Hamilton (Yung Lung, Nyx, Blood & Bone), Melanie Lane (Phantasm, Arkadia, Dream Swamp, Death Peak), Rebecca Jensen and Sarah Aiken (Overworld), Siobhan McKenna (Hush, Rhythmic Fictions), Stephanie Lake (Auto Cannibal, The Chronicles, Manifesto, A Giant Theremin), and Tra Mi Dinh (Seven Dances For Two People). 

Rachel was recently supported by Melanie Lane’s, Corps Conspirators Conjure program to support the beginnings of her choreographic practice. She has also been making site-specific work inspired by parkour and urban landscapes, alongside collaborator Harrison Ritchie-Jones (Slogtown). Together they make films and share their dance practice with youth companies, tertiary students and independent artists. Their first film is titled, I Move To Process My Feelings premiered at Dance (Lens) Festival 2025.
She works closely with Antony Hamilton, Lucy Guerin, Daniel Riley and Joel Bray as Rehearsal Director / Artistic Support.

KIMBALL WONG - WEEK 3

Kimball was born in New Zealand and moved to England at a young age where he trained at the Millennium school for performing arts. Before travelling to Australia he worked with, Michael Clark, and Phoenix Dance Theatre.
In 2007 he joined the Australian Dance Theatre under the directorship of Garry Stewart performing and developing such works as G, Be Your Self, Proximity, Multiverse, Objekt, Habitus, The Beginning of Nature, Supernature and excerpts from older company rep.
Kimball has received multiple nominations for his roles in these work and awards for Australian Dance Awards, outstanding performance by a male dancer 2013 and 2018, for Proximity and The Beginning of Nature. Helpmann award for Best Male Dancer in a Physical Theatre or Ballet work, Habitus 2016. Green room award for Best Male Performer for Be Your Self 2019.
After 14 years with Australian Dance Theatre, Kimball has recently worked with Steph Lake on the new work ‘The Chronicles’ as well as ‘Manifesto’, ‘Monsters’ and was a rehearsal director for Steph during the creation of ‘Circle Electric’ on the Australian Ballet.
